Cast iron is an alloy of iron and carbon, when it is immersed into water, iron becomes anode and carbon changes into cathode. A complete circuit with thousands of million of small cells in water (electrolyte) formed. Micro electric curront occured. Corrosion reaction happens and the cast iron turn into an iron-carbon filter.
